Rodrigo Resende, martial arts instructor in Spruce Grove and Edmonton

Professor Resende

Head Instructor, RR BJJ Academy

Professor Rodrigo Resende started training Judo when he was five years old with his father, Geraldo Resende. As soon as he developed an interest in competition, his father took him to train under Master Takeshi Miura, 9th degree red belt in Judo.

At 13 years of age he started taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes to help improve his Judo groundwork (ne-waza). Since then, Jiu Jitsu has been a permanent part of his martial arts training regimen and way of life.

Rodrigo later moved from Brasília to Salvador for a year with his father where he had the opportunity to train quality jiu jitsu under Masters Ricardo and Edson Carvalho. After that, He moved alone to São Paulo and Belo Horizonte for a couple of years in order to get in a training center for Judo athletes. He represented his State, University and also his Country both before and after returning to his home.

Under Master Max Trombini, one of Cia Paulista founders and a 5th degree black belt, Professor Rodrigo is a 2nd dregree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, and under Master Takeshi Miura, one of the worlds most ranked Judo masters, Sensei Resende holds the 3rd degree Judo black belt.

IN CANADA

In 2007 Rodrigo Resende decided to take a break from University to travel, learn English and experience a different culture. “I had friends in Canada and that motivated me to move here. The idea was to stay for one year, learn, and return to finish my bachelor’s degree, but that didn’t happen.” He was invited to teach at different clubs around the country and after 2 years he chose Edmonton to be his Canadian home.

As the highest rank Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor in Alberta and after 23 years in the martial arts and 11 years teaching experience, Professor Resende is opening his own dojo. Professor is bringing the sum total of his teaching expertise to the community of Spruce Grove, a vibrant city approximately 11 km west of Edmonton. Spruce Grove is also where Rodrigo and his wife have chosen to make a home and raise their family.

Vasfi Aliev

Sensei Aliev

At the age of 11, my father took my brother and I to a Judo school under the guidance of the experienced instructor Tarlan Hasanov, coach of the Olympic champion at Barcelona Games, Nazim Huseynov.

My first competition experience was at the Baku championships with13 years old. At the age of 15, I was already part of the Juveniles National team taking part in training camps with the best Judo and Sambo athletes in the country. Athletes like Elnur Mammadli (Olympic gold medalist) and Movlud Miraliyev (Olympic bronze medalist) were my regular training partners and personal friends.

With regular and consistent training in such good camps, I was able to win the Azerbaijan Judo Nationals and obtain the 1st degree black belt. I was also training and competing Sambo. After winning the Sambo Azerbaijan Championships and joining the national team I received the Master’s Degree in Sambo.
In Canada

After getting established with my family in Edmonton, the summer of 2010, I joined the Judo club “Kodokwai” under the guidance of Sensei Bill Suen. Shortly afterwards, I heard about Sensei Rodrigo Resende, a world-class judoka, and decided to go do some sparring training with him as the Judo Alberta Federation gave me the opportunity to represent them at the Canadian Championship. Sensei Rodrigo helped me to prepare and become a gold medalist in the over 100 kg division and so taking part of the Canadian Judo National Team.

With Sensei Rodrigo’s invitation, I’m now looking forward to sharing my experience and knowledge gained over 20 years, teaching some of the classes at Rodrigo Resende Academy.
